Paris Fashion Week SS27 – Where Fluidity Meets Form

This season, the runway became a canvas for this delicate balancing act. Fabric was sculpted, deconstructed, and draped. Traditional techniques found new expressions, and femininity emerged in a multitude of forms. Three of my favorites from this season were Balenciaga, Givenchy & Issey Miyake.
Across these collections, there was an exploration of the relationship between the body, the garment and the space that exists between them and each maison approached this dialogue with its own distinctive vocabulary.

Balenciaga embraced architectural volume with lightness. Givenchy celebrated the beautiful contradictions of modern femininity. Issey Miyake transformed the possibilities of a single piece of fabric into a display of movement.

BALENCIAGA
There is an unmistakable romance to Pierpaolo Piccioli’s approach to fashion, and at Balenciaga, that sensibility finds a fascinating new expression.

For Spring/Summer 2027, the maison’s legendary architectural vocabulary was softened through fluidity, airiness and an almost effortless sense of movement. Voluminous sleeves — a signature of Piccioli’s design language graced the collection, while delicate frills, feathers and beautifully fluid satin introduced a refreshing lightness to the silhouettes. High-necked blazers brought an almost aristocratic elegance to the collection, while deconstructed shorts and sculptural barrel trousers introduced a more contemporary attitude. And those barrel trousers? An absolute wardrobe desire.

The collection’s strength lay in its contrasts. Even the understated runway setting played its part. Stripped of theatricality, the space allowed the garments to speak for themselves, placing craftsmanship, silhouette and construction at the centre of attention. And perhaps that is what makes Piccioli’s Balenciaga so intriguing. The result is Balenciaga with a softer pulse — sculptural, sophisticated and beautifully alive.

GIVENCHY

There is something incredibly satisfying about watching a creative director develop a visual language so distinctive that every collection becomes an extension of their artistic identity. Sarah Burton is doing precisely that at Givenchy. Her vision for the maison continues to be one of the most compelling creative evolutions in contemporary fashion. Where the house once seemed to be searching for its next defining chapter, Burton has introduced a renewed sense of clarity, confidence and, perhaps most importantly, desirability.
As Burton herself expressed: “I wanted a sense of balance and clarity. A wardrobe to bring precision and simplicity to dressing as we speed through the multiple perspectives and perpetual motion of all our lives.”. And this philosophy was beautifully reflected throughout the collection.
Her sculpted shirts and blazers remain an absolute triumph. The precision of their construction, the deliberate manipulation of collars and the architectural treatment of shoulders transform everyday wardrobe staples into objects of fascination. The use of makeup products as accessories was such a brilliant idea.

The colour blocking was equally captivating — bold and expressive without overwhelming the silhouettes. Subtle references to tie-dye introduced an unexpected artisanal dimension, while the leather jackets offered an entirely different feisty mood. The most breathtaking moments belonged to the draped dresses. Their Grecian fluidity, combined with echoes of ancient Egyptian elegance, created silhouettes that felt mythological. There was something timeless about their simplicity, as if classical sculptures had been reimagined for the modern woman.

Givenchy feels desirable again because it has rediscovered a compelling point of view.

ISSEY MIYAKE

If there is one fashion house that consistently reminds us that fabric possesses a life of its own, it is Issey Miyake. For Spring/Summer 2027, creative director Satoshi Kondo presented Figure of Ma, a fascinating exploration of the relationship between the body, fabric and the space that separates them. The collection felt alive with an elasticity that made the garments appear to dance around the models.
The body-hugging tops and miniature belted dresses were particularly striking. Their fluid construction created an almost second-skin effect, as if the designs had been molded directly onto the body.
But, of course, one cannot speak about Issey Miyake without celebrating the house’s extraordinary mastery of pleating. And this season, the pleats were simply sublime. The collection explored several techniques – Fluiglyph, Caprice, Tempo pleats, each bringing its own personality and movement to the garments.

The long pleated dresses were breathtaking, their graceful movements complemented by beautifully styled head wraps that lent the silhouettes a regal elegance. Nothing felt static. The garments expanded, contracted, swayed and bounced, almost as if they possessed their own personalities.

In all, the wider Spring/Summer 2027 season similarly reflected renewed interest in expressive silhouettes, tactile embellishment and the balance between creative imagination and wearability.
This was definitely a season for the books.

Thanks for reading, xo.
